This is a frame from a timelapse showing me paddling one of my favorite rivers in Florida -- the Chassahowitzka -- captured earlier this year on day 10 of the @NatGeo supported @FL_WildCorridor Expedition.
I shared this photograph with the @The_Explorers_Club over the weekend as a preview of the "Florida Wild” portfolio I am producing as their 2015 Rolex Artist-in-Exploration.
I hope the photo inspires you to get out and explore wild places, whether by traveling afar or rediscovering nature close to home.

Las Vegas metro area has a population of 2.1 million people and is one of the top three destinations in the United States for conventions, business, and meetings. The city's metropolitan area has more AAA Five Diamond hotels than any other city in the world. Las Vegas was incorporated as a city in 1911. Photo by Mike Theiss @ExtremeNature

Phantom Ship is a small island in Crater Lake in it’s namesake national park in Oregon. It is a natural rock formation made of andesite lava and is the oldest rock found above the surface of the lake. It derives its name from its resemblance to a ghost ship, especially in foggy and low-light conditions. Photographed
TA PLACES 10:
The stunning horseshoe bend near Page, Arizona is one of my favorite places to visit but it can be a challenge to photograph. The hike to the canyon is less than a mile, up and down a hill.
You need to overcome a fear of heights - there are no guard rails around the canyon walls and it is about 1000 feet down to the river.
Lighting here can be tricky. Depending on the time of day, there can be harsh shadows in the canyon. I like the early morning before the sunlight hits the canyon. Even then, the use of a graduated neutral density filter can help capture more sky detail while properly exposing the canyon. For this shot, I decided to cut out the sky and focus on some of the details of the canyon walls.
