Amazing Places of Robbie Shone the Gorner glacier, Switzerland
1- We're exploring moulins and caves inside the Gorner glacier SwitzerlandWe're following narrow meandering passages deeper into the ice to try and get a better understanding at the rate of melt and what influences the speed the glacier moves. Each time I come here,
I'm immediately struck by a shrunken volume of ice and a drop from the level the glacier was last time round. It's depressing to think that one day Europe will be without these amazing glaciers.
2- About to embark on a journey in the ice
an explorer traverses over a pool of water leaving the daylight behind inside a moulin on the Gorner glacier in Switzerland, the second largest glacial system in the Alps.
3- From a small ledge midway down a glacier cave or moulin
this is the view looking up at a giant wall of ice, while an explorer ascends a rope to reach the surface. What is interesting about this particular moulin is that it is located inside the contact between the Gorner and Schwärze glaciers in Switzerland, forming a cave inside this enlarged fracture.
4- Deep inside the Gorner glacier, Switzerland
a member of our team of Italian explorers ascends a rope in a narrow slot
through the beautifully sculptured ice. As a result of the movement of the glacier such moulins don't exist for long, it is therefore important to carry out thorough documentation as next year this
cave will be gone.
5- An Italian explorer traverses through a canyon
avoiding deep cold water below a thin unstable crust of ice inside a moulin on the Gorner glacier, Switzerland. Progress is often slow when the floor is dangerously unstable like here. This was the first of many glacier caves we descended during our recent expedition to the area. More to follow...
